Riyo Mori of Japan won the 2007 Miss Universe beauty pageant Monday in Mexico City, organizers said. Mori, 20, from the city of Shizuoka, beat 76 rivals from around the world to win the crown. Contestants from Brazil and Venezuela placed second and third, respectively. “I learned how to always be happy, be patient and to be positive, and this is what I want to teach to the next generation,” Mori said during the interview competition.

Also: During the evening gown parade, Miss USA, Rachel Smith, slipped on the runway and landed on her bottom, although the slip didn’t stop her earning fifth place. A handful of Mexicans booed Smith in the run-up to the finals because of what they saw as U.S. unfriendliness toward illegal immigrants. Check out the little video
